Haram-Al-Sharif

Simple question- if Jerusalem is not a Jewish holy site, then why did Mohammed choose there to ascend? Medina and Mecca are understandable as they are within the Arabic peninsula, but why Israel, why Jerusalem, why the Temple Mount, if there was no previous holiness? Even with Mecca, the Kaba was originally a pagan holy site.....Think about it.....
